A proven passage
A practical route for the right yacht.
For generations, yachts have moved between the English Channel and the Mediterranean through the French inland-waterway network. For a boat that fits, it can be an extraordinary journey through the heart of France, with a very different rhythm from an offshore delivery and no need to round Biscay or Atlantic Iberia.
Summer 2026 made the problem unusually clear. A route that opened in spring progressively lost depth and through connections. By 14 August, Voies navigables de France said that the north–south connection was no longer assured.
That does not make inland navigation impossible; it makes timing, dimensions and current information part of the adventure. This guide explains how to choose confidently rather than prescribing one itinerary. Current VNF notices, CNR information, charts, local instructions and the skipper’s assessment take precedence.
All three options work
The aim is to choose well—not to be put off.
These are established ways of moving boats, and each has a strong case. VNF recorded 11,089 private pleasure boats across the French network in 2025; CNR recorded 9,659 pleasure-craft lock passages on the Rhône in 2023. Those figures are not counts of complete Channel–Mediterranean yacht transits, but they show a living network used by thousands of boaters—not a theoretical line on a map.
Historic towns, rural landscapes and a slower, sociable rhythm; less offshore exposure; simple haltes as well as marinas; and a memorable passage for a yacht that fits the open route.
Usually the fastest water route, with no mast conversion, long lock sequence or road preparation. It can be a purposeful offshore delivery or a beautiful coastal cruise.
A strong option for a transportable yacht when schedule certainty matters, sea miles are undesirable or the boat is not ready for an offshore passage.
Many boats successfully use these routes every season. The measurements, notices and contingencies in this guide are there to help an owner join them with the right boat, season and plan—not to suggest that the journey should not be attempted.
Three route families
There is no single “French canals route.”
The practical north–south choices are families of waterways. A restriction in one connecting canal can remove the whole transit even while the Seine, Saône and Rhône remain open. The Canal de Bourgogne is not the name of the entire Channel–Mediterranean route: it is the 242-kilometre link between Migennes on the Yonne and Saint-Jean-de-Losne on the Saône.
The lower Seine is not normally the controlling draught question. The problem appears later, where a major river narrows into a shallow canal, restricted lock flight, tunnel or water-dependent summit section.
Draught
Why “1.8 metres allowed” is the wrong test.
VNF defines mouillage as the published available depth in the navigation channel for a named section. It is water depth—not “permitted yacht draught” and not a guarantee that the full route is clear. The difference between that figure and the vessel’s loaded draught is the pied de pilote: the nominal margin beneath the keel.
On the Canal de Bourgogne, the route-limiting normally published figure is 1.60 metres on the shallow central section. Deeper figures elsewhere do not help a yacht that cannot pass this controlling section.
These figures compare published channel depth with yacht draught. They do not include a chosen under-keel safety allowance, squat, trim, loading uncertainty, silt or a temporary VNF restriction.
In practical terms, a yacht drawing 1.80 metres is too deep for the normally published 1.60-metre section, before any safety margin is added. Shallower yachts make the journey, but the skipper still needs to measure the boat as loaded and check the tightest sections against current VNF information before setting off.
Air draught
Mast down is only the beginning.
The Pouilly-en-Auxois tunnel is listed at 3.10 metres above the water on its centreline and 2.50 metres at the sides. That does not automatically mean stripping every deck fitting from the yacht.
Measure the yacht from the waterline to its highest point with the mast down, including arches, sprayhoods, aerials and railings. If that profile will not fit a controlling structure with a sensible margin, the items creating the height need to be lowered or removed before the transit.
The mast normally remains down for the inland transit because the route contains many bridges and structures, not only the Pouilly tunnel. Unstep before the first limiting structure and plan re-stepping after the last one. Sea-access yards around Le Havre/Rouen and Port-Saint-Louis are common planning areas, but the exact yard, crane, berth, bookings and current route clearances must be confirmed for the job.

Set a clear go/no-go point: before entering the first shallow connecting canal, decide the latest date by which the complete route must be confirmed open. If it cannot be confirmed, change to the Atlantic route, arrange road transport or pause at a suitable yard while the yacht is still close to a practical exit.
Seasonality
For a summer in the Med, aim to enter in May or early June.
If the plan is to use the yacht in the Mediterranean during summer, May or early June is the most useful target for entering the French waterways from the north. It is normally after the seasonal opening but before the greater late-summer pressure on reservoirs and channel depth. Allow the full 4–7-week southbound planning window, plus contingency, rather than working backwards from one ideal arrival day.
That timing is a starting point, not a guarantee. High spring flow, maintenance or an early restriction can still intervene, so confirm the complete route with VNF immediately before entry. A later summer departure carries more low-water risk; autumn can bring reduced operations and poorer sea-weather options if the yacht has to return to an Atlantic plan.
Copernicus recorded exceptionally low flows across central France in July 2026. That supports a discussion of climate exposure, but not the claim that one closure was caused solely by climate change or El Niño. The accurate conclusion is simpler: both low and high water can remove an inland route, and the delivery plan needs current evidence.
Direction matters
Northbound is not southbound in reverse.
CNR warns that current, Mistral and movable-dam operation can create local water speeds of 3–4 m/s—approximately 5.8–7.8 knots. Southbound current can increase progress but also stopping distance and handling pressure. Northbound, the yacht may have little or no useful headway.

French regulation requires sufficient installed propulsion for an upstream vessel to achieve that result. In plain language: heading north, the yacht must still make at least 1.9 knots over the ground against the river. It is a performance test, not a universal horsepower figure.
A commercial tow or pusher may sometimes be the planned solution, but it must be arranged before entering the problem section, with suitable attachment points, lock handling, insurance and responsibility agreed. It is not an improvised rescue plan. During declared flood conditions, pleasure navigation may be prohibited regardless of engine power.
How long?
Think in planning windows, not a promised arrival day.
The Canal de Bourgogne alone covers 242 kilometres and 189 locks. Lock cycles, grouped passages, booking, restricted operating hours, commercial traffic, maintenance and water conditions often matter more than nominal cruising speed.
For a yacht that physically fits, including normal operational margin.
Allowing additional northbound Rhône performance and waiting risk.
A practical delivery-planning range; weather, direction, yacht speed and stops dominate.
But preparation, permits, yards and booking can add one or more weeks.

A fast, well-prepared yacht with a clean weather sequence can therefore make the Atlantic delivery in about a week. One to two weeks is a more useful planning range. A smaller or slower yacht, a northbound delivery, or a passage broken into coastal legs via Brest, A Coruña or Vigo, Cascais and Lagos can take longer.
These are Red Sky planning estimates to show the scale of the decision—not VNF timetables or delivery quotations. Exact endpoints, yacht speed, crew, route, season, weather and operating notices can move them materially.
Two Atlantic routes
Cross Biscay—or turn the coast into the passage.
“Go by the Atlantic” does not describe one itinerary. For a delivery whose purpose is to reach Gibraltar or the Mediterranean efficiently, a suitable offshore yacht and crew may use a clean weather window to cross Biscay directly, often from the Channel or Brittany approaches towards Galicia. Depending on the endpoints, that can avoid hundreds of miles of coastal detours, repeated harbour approaches, marina nights and stop-start crew time.
The coastal alternative can be a superb voyage in its own right: the Bay of Quiberon and Belle-Île, Houat and Hoëdic; the approaches to La Rochelle and the islands of Ré and Oléron; then the Basque, Cantabrian, Asturian and Galician coasts. Northern Spain has a useful chain of fishing ports and marinas, allowing the coast to be divided into manageable legs. That can make the route more realistic for a smaller, slower or less “blue-water” yacht whose condition, range or crew would make one long Biscay crossing unattractive.
But “hug the coast” is not automatically the safer plan. It creates more tidal gates, traffic, fishing gear, shoals and harbour entrances, and exposed stretches remain. Some potential refuges are constrained by weather, tide, draught or daylight. Every intended harbour and fallback still needs current charts and pilotage, local notices, a suitable forecast and confirmation that it suits the yacht.
For a professional delivery, the extra distance and stops usually make the coastal version inefficient. For an owner who wants the passage to be the holiday, allowing a month or more can turn the same route into a memorable Atlantic cruise while still reaching the Mediterranean season—provided the timetable includes real weather margin.
What does it cost?
The locks are not the expensive part.
CNR-managed Rhône locks are free for leisure boats. On VNF-managed waterways, the main fixed network charge is the time-based pleasure-navigation vignette rather than a toll collected at every lock.

Opening hours and delays still matterBerthing varies from simple free or low-service haltes to full marinas. For an Atlantic delivery, the useful price basket is made from stops the yacht might actually use—such as Brest, A Coruña or Vigo, Cascais and Lagos—not one generic coastal rate. As a dated example, Marina de Lagos publishes 2026 daily prices for a 10–11.99-metre yacht of €28 low season, €48.70 mid-season and €50.10 high season, before VAT; beam can move the yacht into a higher class. Availability and current tariffs still need checking.
The costs that can dominate are fuel and engine hours, mast handling and cranes, professional crew days, travel, paid stops, maintenance, a pre-arranged tow, road haulage and the consequences of waiting or abandoning the route. Compare the whole job, not the vignette.
One yacht, three delivery methods
When inland, Atlantic or road makes sense.
The yacht genuinely fits an open corridor and time has contingency.
The yacht is offshore-ready and can remain in sailing configuration.
The yacht is transportable and schedule certainty justifies the quote.
Loaded draught, air draught, closures and propulsion.
Weather, condition, crew and refuge options.
Beam, loaded height, weight, access and permits.
Low/high water, locks, engine endurance and getting trapped.
Biscay, Atlantic Iberia, fishing gear and orca planning.
Cranes, handling damage, escorts and first/last-mile access.
A unique voyage through France, with less offshore exposure and a network of waterside stops.
The quickest water route; no de-rigging, road preparation or long lock sequence.
Predictable physical movement and reduced sea-weather exposure once arranged.

Road transport dimensions
Will the yacht fit on the road?
There is no single maximum yacht length. The transport question is the complete loaded convoy: tractor, trailer, cradle, yacht and anything left fitted. A relatively short yacht with a wide beam or deep fixed keel may be more complex than a longer, narrow, light yacht.
For the vehicle classes covered by Directive 96/53, the ordinary maximum height is 4.00 m. The yacht is measured as part of the complete loaded vehicle.
Also no more than 20 m overall and 48 t gross. When ordinary limits are exceeded, the movement is exceptional even if it remains within this first-category ceiling.
Or more than 20 m up to 25 m overall, or more than 48 t up to 72 t. The highest characteristic determines the category.
Or over 25 m overall, or over 72 t. This is route-specific specialist work.
These are convoy categories, not yacht-size permissions. Height is especially route-dependent: the trailer deck, keel and cradle can make a yacht much taller than expected, and the route must clear bridges, cables, signs, trees and yard entrances. Depending on the yacht and the quotation, a specialist may need the mast, boom, arches, pulpits, pushpits, rudder or keel removed.
Most cruising yachts being compared here exceed the ordinary 2.55-metre road width. That does not make road delivery impossible—it makes it a planned and permitted specialist movement. If the journey begins or ends in the UK, key abnormal-load triggers include more than 2.9 m width, more than 18.65 m rigid length or more than 44 t gross. Ferry and port handling, customs, lifting points, crane capacity and the first and last road miles may be more restrictive than the motorway.
Planning figures only: ask a specialist haulier to confirm the loaded transport drawing, exact route, permits, escorts, lifting plan and insurance. Do not infer road feasibility from yacht LOA alone.
Preparation
How to make the chosen route work.
Measure the loaded yacht
Draught, beam, length, displacement and the highest point in the complete mast-down configuration.
Test the controlling corridor
Check every canal, tunnel, bridge and lock—not just the Seine or Rhône.
Confirm live status
Use VNF NAVI, Avis à la batellerie and CNR InfoRhône, then speak to the relevant regional authority or operator.
Prove the propulsion case
Use realistic loaded performance, fuel range, cooling condition and reserve—particularly northbound.
Plan mast and lock handling
Crane bookings, supports, rig security, lines, fenders, crew roles and safe deck movement.
Check documents and cover
Registration, appropriate skipper qualification, radio documents, VNF vignette and insurance that covers the intended inland operation.
Price the whole route
Fuel, crew, travel, cranes, berthing, maintenance, waiting, tow or transport and disruption contingency.
Set the fallback date
Decide when an uncertain inland route becomes an Atlantic departure, road movement or planned period ashore.
Common questions
The practical answer.
Can a yacht drawing 1.80 metres cross France?
Do not treat it as a dependable default. The Canal de Bourgogne includes a nominal 1.60-metre section and temporary restrictions can reduce depth further. Equality between yacht draught and channel depth would still leave no under-keel margin.
Which direction is easier?
There is no universal answer, but northbound Rhône propulsion is a distinct constraint. Southbound current may help progress while increasing handling demands. Weather and waterway status still control both directions.
What is the best time of year?
Late spring to early summer may offer the strongest candidate window, after seasonal opening and before typical late-summer water pressure. It is not guaranteed: floods, maintenance, reservoir works and early restrictions can still intervene.
Do you pay for every lock?
No. CNR says its Rhône locks are free for leisure boats. On the VNF network, most relevant yachts require a time-based vignette. Marina, crane and other service charges are separate.
Could a yacht need a tow northbound?
Yes, if it cannot maintain adequate progress against the Rhône current, but this should be a planned commercial operation—not an emergency assumption. The tow, route sections, insurance and lock handling need advance agreement.
What size yacht can travel by road?
There is no universal LOA cutoff. Specialists work from the complete loaded convoy's width, height, length, mass, axle loads and route. In France, exceptional-transport categories step at 3 m and 4 m width, 20 m and 25 m convoy length, and 48 t and 72 t gross mass; the highest characteristic controls.
Is the Atlantic alternative always a direct Biscay crossing?
No. A direct offshore crossing is normally the efficient delivery route. Following western France and northern Spain can make a smaller, slower or less offshore-oriented yacht more manageable in shorter legs, but it adds distance, time, harbour approaches and marina costs. It does not turn the Atlantic into sheltered water. Neither option is universally safer: the right choice depends on the yacht, crew, season, forecast and purpose of the passage.
